Course Description:
The National Reentry Coalition (NRC) Foundations of Peer Reentry Coaching Course prepares individuals—especially those with lived experience—to support justice-impacted individuals returning to their communities after incarceration. This foundational training introduces the core principles, practices, ethics, and professional standards of peer reentry coaching while emphasizing rehabilitation, recovery, reintegration, and long-term behavior change.
Participants will explore evidence-based approaches, including Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral principles, strengths-based coaching, and the Risk-Need-Responsivity (RNR) model. The course also examines the impact of trauma, incarceration, stigma, addiction, mental health challenges, and systemic barriers commonly experienced during the reentry process.
Special attention is given to developing effective communication skills, professional boundaries, trauma-informed support strategies, systems navigation, advocacy, and practical approaches for helping individuals access housing, employment, treatment, recovery support, education, and other essential community resources. Participants will also learn strategies for promoting accountability, resilience, self-efficacy, and pro-social reintegration.
